Last week, a tragic collision on a highway in southwestern Manitoba claimed the lives of 15 individuals, with volunteer firefighters being the initial emergency responders at the scene. The accident occurred near Carberry and resulted in injuries to 10 others. The victims, predominantly seniors from Dauphin, approximately 150 kilometers north of Carberry and 320 kilometers northwest of Winnipeg, were traveling in a small bus that was struck by a semi, as reported by the RCMP. Despite their vital role in emergency response nationwide, fire officials noted a decline in the number of volunteers within Canadian fire departments since 2016.
